Remembering Ahmaud Arbery as Trial is Underway

He was 25 years old.

He was jogging in Georgia.

On May 7th, 2020, I learned about the unjust killing of Ahmaud Arbery. Almost a week before, I learned about the death of Breonna Taylor. And two weeks before, the world witnessed the devastating death of George Floyd.

Arbery was the victim of a modern-day lynching.

The racial reckoning in the aftermath of George Floyd forced us all to recognize the reality of Black bodies violently torn asunder in America; — to see it with a clear eye view. Whether or not everyone was willing to accept it, the racial awakening of 2020 transformed America. It was, unfortunately, at the expense of Black bodies.

Ahmaud Arbery was human.

Ahmaud Arbery was a son.

Ahmaud Arbery was a brother.

On February 23, 2020, Ahmaud Arbery was hunted down and killed while jogging in Brunswick, Georgia. He was 25-years old. Arbery, who was allegedly suspected of vacant home theft and trespassing in the Satilla Shores neighborhood
